38 Special is a Southern rock band with roots firmly rooted in Jacksonville, Florida. Formed in 1975, guitarist Don Barnes and vocalist Donnie Van Zant came together to found the band. Like other Jacksonville bands at the time, they began playing classic Southern rock.
Their sound eventually evolved into commercial rock. After more than thirty years, 38 Special continues to blast their Southern rock sound into cities around the world. Even though members come and go, their signature sound remains the band's defining characteristic. It
didn't take long for the band to achieve commercial success, mainly because fans embraced the band's Southern rock and pop sound. Their music spans many genres, unlike many bands that are pigeonholed into one particular genre. Regardless, the band began to achieve success.
Don Barnes' powerful vocals blended well with Johnny Van Zant's deep southern sound. This created a powerful combination of rock and pop sensibilities, particularly with the songs "Caught Up in You" and "Hold On Loosely." Radio stations eventually took notice of the band's music, as did the folks at MTV.
Although they were just starting out, their first two releases weren't very successful by record industry standards. Still, the band knew they had something special. "Rockin' into the Night" was released in 1979, earning them a top 40 single.

In 1981, the group achieved success with "Wild Eyed Southern Boys," which included the top 40 hit "Hold On Loosely." With this song, the group knew they had created something lasting and that would stand the test of time. "Special Forces" was released in 1982, with two top 10 hits, "If I'd Been the One" and "Caught Up in You."

After more than five decades together, 38 SPECIAL continues to bring their Southern rock sound to over 100 cities a year. At each concert, thousands of spectators are amazed by the band's explosive power.
The numerous awards for their gold and platinum albums are a testament to the endurance of a legendary band.
